Milwaukee’s path toward a more sustainable, resilient future isn’t just a vision—it’s something we’re actively building together.

Across the city, that progress is becoming more visible—through expanded clean energy efforts, neighborhood-level engagement, and a growing sense that sustainability is no longer a niche conversation, but a shared responsibility.

A driving force behind this is the City of Milwaukee’s Environmental Collaboration Office (ECO), whose leadership continues to turn long-term planning into tangible, community-driven action. At Rock the Green, we’re proud to partner in that effort—bringing these ideas to life each year through our Earth Day Celebration, where sustainability becomes something you can see, feel, and experience.

A Year of Progress and Possibility

ECO’s recent work reflects a city gaining momentum.

Through initiatives highlighted in their latest updates, Milwaukee is continuing to expand access to clean energy, support building efficiency, and invest in solutions that address both environmental impact and quality of life.

Milwaukee’s Climate and Equity Plan serves as a guiding framework—but what’s most exciting is how that framework is actively taking shape across the city.

Recent updates highlight a broader shift already underway:

  • Increased focus on scaling renewable energy and solar access

  • Continued investment in energy efficiency and building performance

  • Expansion of community-based programs that engage residents directly

  • Growing alignment between climate action and economic opportunity

This isn’t just policy—it’s progress that’s beginning to show up in everyday life across Milwaukee.

Community at the Core

One of the most important themes emerging from ECO’s work is the role of community.

Sustainability isn’t being built in isolation—it’s being shaped through partnerships, neighborhood engagement, and a recognition that meaningful change happens when people are part of the process.

Programs like ECO Neighborhoods continue to demonstrate how local involvement can drive broader impact, ensuring that climate solutions are not only effective, but inclusive and equitable.

Leadership That Connects Vision and Action

At the center of this work is Erick Shambarger, Director of Environmental Sustainability for the City of Milwaukee, whose leadership reflects both pragmatism and possibility. His approach acknowledges the complexity of the challenges ahead—while remaining grounded in the belief that cities like Milwaukee can lead through collaboration, innovation, and persistence. In his TED Talk, Erick speaks to this balance—highlighting how progress often comes not from a single breakthrough, but from sustained, collective effort.

Earth Day as a Reflection of the Work

This year Milwaukee Riverkeeper’s 31st Spring Cleanup brings over 4,000 volunteers together to care for our waterways—demonstrating the power of shared action.

Immediately following, Rock the Green’s Earth Day Celebration creates space for that same community to gather, connect, and celebrate what sustainability looks like in practice.

It’s a continuation of the same story:

  • Action in the morning

  • Connection in the afternoon

  • Community throughout

Looking Ahead

Milwaukee’s sustainability journey is ongoing—but it is clearly moving forward.

From policy to implementation, from city leadership to neighborhood engagement, the work of building a more resilient future is no longer abstract—it’s happening now.

At Rock the Green, we’re honored to be part of that movement—and to help create moments where that progress becomes visible, tangible, and shared.

Join us on April 25 at the Harley-Davidson Museum campus for Rock the Green’s 15th Annual Earth Day Celebration presented by the City of Milwaukee's Environmental Collaboration Office and Milwaukee Riverkeeper —where sustainability comes to life through music, community, and action—on a fully pedal-powered stage.
